Day 1 3rd August 2022
Our first session took place on 3 August 2022. We introduced ourselves to the class and with that, each of us wrote our name on a page of a sketchbook provided by our faculty. She explained the basics of typography and the tasks we are going to do for this course.
HANDYGLOVES
In this topic, we got to know about the different parts of the letter in a word which is basically called type anatomy. This is the most important part of typography as from this we got to know how important each font is in its own field.
Typography is divided into two parts
Fonts are of many types like serif, sans serif, slab serif, script, decorative and block letter.
Assignment:
- Take 5 pictures of each type
Types of Fonts - We got a field assignment to take pictures of different fonts all around the campus and find the type anatomy in them and combine them into a video.
Video referring to the anatomy of letters:
We started our day by watching this video about type fonts created by Shiva Nallaperumal
We chose 5 words from the board and then we did some expressive typography with those words.
EXPRESSIVE TYPOGRAPHY:
We were supposed to make a spread from our favourite magazine
I took a spread from Grazia magazine and recreated it
Day 3 5th August 2022
We learned new terms which are used in texts
Kerning: The process of adjusting the space between the letters.
Tracking: The process of adjusting the space between the words.
Widow: It is a word or short group of words that appear at the bottom of a paragraph, or page.
Orphan: It's when the first line of a paragraph sits at the bottom of a page by itself.
Rags: It's an uneven ending of the text.
River: Uneven spaces between the words in a paragraph.
Body text size: 11 pt
Line length: 52 to 60
We then wrote a poem based on a word we chose for experimental layouts.
I chose the word 'Anticipation'
Anticipation is when the grains of sand waits
for the tranquil waters to return;
Anticipation is when the cub waits
for her mother to return
with the prey torn apart and held between those jaws;
Anticipation is when the cuckoo waits
for her mother to return;
Anticipation is that drought field waiting
for those chilly drops of water to kiss them;
Day 4 6th August 2022
Everyone was asked to research a graphic designer given by the faculty and later on was asked to give the presentation to the whole class. I got P. Scott Makela
P. Scott Makela was a graphic designer, multimedia designer, and type designer from Minnesota. He was among the first ones to explore photoshop and illustrator. He worked for apple computer, Rossignol, Nike, and Sony. His designs were featured in many magazines including eye magazine. He designed "Dead History" in 1990 created by mashing together two existing digital fonts Linotype centennial and rounded VAG. It uses both geometric sans-serif and didone serif typefaces.
Then we were assigned to choose a topic to create content to create the following outcomes:
- AR
- Scanimation
Some of my ideas:
I chose the topic POP MUSIC
Augmented Reality
I decided to make a pop music quiz using spark AR. My AR is inspired by Instagram filters. I prepared some guess cards containing the incomplete lyrics of some popular pop songs. In this filter, a person gets 5 sec time to guess the lyrics of the song, so when the countdown ends the answer card will show up with the correct song along with the sub-genre of that song. In this way, people will know about different pop songs and will also learn about the subgenre of pop songs.
Here's how I created that AR filter
Scanimation
In this, I created pop music art using a vibrant color scheme. I used 3 frames by adding different elements in each frame and by adjusting the size of the shapes. I used scanimation.org for creating this
Here's how I created that scanimation

ART MOVEMENT:
Then we were given a topic by our faculty. We were supposed to research that topic and later on were asked to create an art movement and outcome.
My topic was Grunge - It's a type of rock music and the way of wearing dark, torn clothes which turns out to be the goth look. This trend was famous during 1990s.
